DEBATE THE FUTURE OF WADEBRIDGE

Sunday 16 January 2011

Planners recommendations now published

The planners recommendations have re-emerged from their three month break unchanged in essence, although a lot of effort has gone into attempting to mask the fatal flaws in these applications, particularly the level of impact upon the everyday shops in our town centre of up to 30%.

You will see that they give the go-ahead to Sainsbury’s and Tesco, but reject the Morrison’s application. You can see the documents for yourselves on http://www.lovewadebridge.com/Planning.html.

We are hopeful that our councillors will consider the case for themselves and come to an independent judgement, as has been the case in previous discussions about the future of Wadebridge, rather than just follow these recommendations. The Strategic Planning Committee meeting will be at St Austell on Monday 24th January 2011 at 1 pm.

That will be a fateful day for our town.

  1. What a shame a group that pretends to represent the people of Wadebridge has such a one sided approach.

Just scanning through the applications both parties are offering a tremendous amount of support to our lovely town. 20K on website, improved cycling facilities, subsidising parking, public transport, improved parking, pedestrianisation of Molesworth street and the list goes on!

30% loss of business to the town can easily balanced with the investment made.

I liked the fact that the original plan for Tescos removed the details for a cafe to further help local outlets.

Both plans will create further interest in the town along with lots of skilled jobs.

As your site suggested I will be writing a letter to Gavin Smith offering my support along with many others of the town that do not support this group.

  2. Well lets face it Lovewadebridge got it all wrong from the start.

    Presumptuous

    Assuming

    Militant

    Intimidating

    Driven by some horrific prejudices

    Misinformed

    Full of spin

    Over dramatic

I must say though that there are a few within the group who did not fit this description it's just a shame they could not exert more control over the groups direction, I'm sure this would have attracted more members and made for a more representative perspective on the whole thing.

These estimates of impact on trade of up to 30% are just laughable, if not today then at some point another supermarket will arrive in the town.
I use both the supermarkets and most of the local shops in town but I must say there are a few local outlets that have much to learn if they want to keep my local trade.

    Example:
Food outlet in town close for around a week in the 4 weeks prior to Christmas!

Other stores not open on some Sat am's just after Christmas!

These are the things that will cause drops in trade which will then be picked up by other stores some of which will be supermarkets.

    "Must try harder"

Just a final thing, attended the WREN launch on Sat, quite impressed should be a good thing if we can get it off the ground.
