DEBATE THE FUTURE OF WADEBRIDGE

Wednesday 2 June 2010

Come to the public meeting

This is just to remind you that the most important thing you can do for the campaign at the moment is to come along to the Wadebridge Town Hall meeting at 6.00 pm Thursday 3 June.

A good turn-out will be all important to make it very clear that we cannot be bull-dozed into passivity and resignation by the supermarkets' public relations machines.

Our planning consultant, Stephen Gill, has now had a chance to look through some of the key material, and will be able to give us an informed assessment of the possible impact of these developments on the town, and how they fit into the planning process.

We look forward very much to seeing you all tomorrow for what will be a very important meeting.

  1. I would like to ask a question.....

Has Stephen Gill been commissioned on his reputation as someone with good local knowledge (ie of Wadebridge and surrounding area) and planning expertise or as someone who has a reputation for "taking on" supermarkets and planning expertise?

I hope that it is the former.

Just remember that during your meeting Lovewadebridge does not speak for the whole of the town!

  2. Uke, since no-one from lovewadebridge seems to be answering your question, I will try

Having listened to Mr Gill speak this evening, he sounded like a Geordie, but he did say he used to work in NCDC planning department many years ago. He did on several occasions (although not very convincingly to me) make a point that he is in no way anti-supermarket, and even welcomes them as long as they are in the town centre and not out of town.

It was reassuring to see quite a small turnout, and especially that there were the odd ones who were clearly not interested in what was being presented and many that had gone along just out of interest, not seeing the meeting through to the end. There were clearly those with a vested interest who generally think that it is disgraceful for consumers to be given a choice and value for money.
Mr Gill used an example that the jewellers trade would be affected if a second out of town supermarket was built.

I'd like to see a response from lovewadebridge answering Uke's question please

  3. Jeweller's trade affected by a supermarket??!! That's a good one!
If that's the best Mr Gill can come up with I hope for Lovewadebridge's sake that he came to meeting out of good will and did not charge them a fee!

    This is becoming quite amusing.

Radio Cornwall was interesting yesterday, re Twitter comments, I would not call Mr Reed's airing particularly "balanced". I've heard him do better, but this may have been more to do with all the "anti supermarket" callers.

What was most interesting was that the number of people (supposedly residents of Wadebridge) who signed the petition started at 3000 then later went up by 500 within the duration of the show. Maybe within the next couple of weeks it will reach 5000?!
I just hope that someone is aware of the total population of the town and knows when to stop otherwise things are going to look really silly!
