Our ideas for keeping the heart in Wadebridge

Some comments made on this blog have suggested quite wrongly that LOVEWADEBRIDGE.COM is a purely anti-supermarket campaign.

It's true that our most immediate concern is that new out-of-town developments would take the heart out of our market town. But our long-term interests are much wider than this.

We're committed to ensuring that Wadebridge thrives as a centre for local business and employment. We seek developments that will enhance its prosperity and vitality for future generations. At the same time we'll resist those that may damage the town's character, economy and quality of life.

We believe that local residents and businesses, not outside corporations, should make the key decisions on how our town should best be developed.

We wish to support and collaborate with key bodies in Wadebridge to help attract investment to the town and area while protecting the exceptional quality of life.

Friends of LOVEWADEBRIDGE.COM have suggested a number of initiatives that can build on the town's unusually favourable characteristics. These can be listed under two heads - strengthening the town centre and encouraging high end employment.

Town centre ideas include:
- A shop local loyalty card scheme
- Promoting the town's independent retailers, plus local food and goods
- Improved access, including additional parking
- Outdoor markets
- Street entertainment

High end employment ideas include: -
- eco-tourism
- (Silicon) Camel Valley
- Low-carbon economy
- Creative industries

You can find more information about these initiatives to keep the heart in Wadebridge on our main website at LoveWadebridge.com

  1. one would be forgiven having now seen your calamity attempt at sabotage of morrisons public consultation and the bullying at the door of the town hall during sainsbury's consultation that the group is anti-supermarket. Indeed your latest poster has the words "store wars" and "threaten the town". Surely you can see that both your group members actions and your use of publicity material can be deemed that you are an anti-supermarket group?

  2. Finally a post that's not supermarket related, better late than never.
I have read these ideas on the website but have failed to see or hear whats being done about them.

Town centre ideas look OK. I think the focus needs to be on doing what supermarkets don't or cannot, not replicating their ideas....loyalty scheme? I'm not so sure.

High end employment ideas to me seem a little grandiose but I suppose its good to aim high.

I think the problem is that Lovewadebridge's language is a little to militant me (maybe for others too who knows?). Words like "attack" "threat" "fatal" "war" stir strong emotions and I'm not sure that this is the best way to increase your support base.
They are all very "anti" words used mostly as far as I see in relation to supermarkets.

You have to remember that for all their negative qualities people like supermarkets you only have to see how busy they get to realise this.

Personally, based both on this blog and having seen and briefly spoken with members/supporters in town, I feel wary of Lovewadebridge, I feel it claims to speak for the town in a very unrepresentative way. I guess the way to change this would be to join the group and try to influence it, however, at present I am unconvinced this would be a good move for me.

The last post though is a refreshing change!
